tom lehrer è un cantautore, umorista e matematico americano. studente ad harvard e docente al MIT, tom lehrer è ricordato però per le sue canzoni degli anni 50, come the elements, dove recita tutti gli elementi chimici allora conosciuti, vatican rag, delizioso ragtime composto per sostenere la chiesa cattolica purtroppo mai adottato come inno religioso dal vaticano (peccato perchè il ritornello bow your head with great respect and genuflect, genuflect, genuflect! poteva funzionare), e molte altre dedicate alla matematica, alla fisica e all’esercito, tutte molto intelligenti e divertenti.

ma la mia canzone preferita di tom lehrer è sicuramente la bellissima poisoning pigeons in the park, tormentone del mese per guylum bardot, dove tom racconta uno dei suoi hobby preferiti: avvelenare i piccioni nel parco:

All the world seems in tune
On a spring afternoon,
When we’re poisoning pigeons in the park.
Ev’ry Sunday you’ll see

tra l’altro oggi il testo della sua canzone send the marines, scritta nel 1967, è casualmente di attualità:
